Total wagering on American horse racing events reached $3.2bn during the first half of 2026. The quarterly total reflects a 2.54% year-over-year decrease, continuing a sustained contraction in betting volume across US tracks.
Monthly Performance and Track Schedules
June wagering activity recorded a 4.70% decline, settling at $911.9m for the month. Several racing circuits shortened their calendars during the quarter, while weather interruptions further limited event availability. The quarter featured 978 race days, down from 997 in the same period last year. Total races held fell from 8,004 to 7,897.Average daily handle decreased 2.41% to $3,298,243. Prize money distributions increased despite the lower betting totals, reaching $340.7m in Q2, a 3.51% rise from the previous year.
These quarterly results follow a four-year period of declining monthly wagering across American circuits. Track operators continue to adjust scheduling and purse structures in response to shifting betting patterns.
